I blink a few times to process his strange question. \u201cUh,
\nyeah? Who doesn\u2019t?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Paxton chuckles. \u201cYou\u2019d be surprised. What do you listen
\nto?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cCountry,\u201d I say, without hesitation.<\/span><\/div>\n
He scrunches his nose up, like he\u2019d smelled something funny.
\n\u201cI said music.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThat is music.\u201d I laugh. \u201cWhat do you listen to. Wait, let
\nme guess.\u201d I tap my lips. \u201cNot ska since you\u2019re obviously not a native
\nCalifornian.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThe accent give me away?\u201d Again with the head tilt and
\nsmirk.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cPretty much.\u201d I\u2019ll keep the fact that I love it to myself.
\n\u201cYou don\u2019t strike me as the rap-type either.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cAre you trying to analyze me?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Another wave of heat coats my cheeks. \u201cNo, just using
\ndeductive reasoning.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cUh huh. How about I save you the trouble. I\u2019m a rock guy.
\nAlternative, to be exact. Lots of old school mixed with new.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
I stare at him blankly. \u201cHuh?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cAlice in Chains?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Nothing.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cStone Temple Pilots?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThe who?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
He rolls his eyes. \u201cYou have to know the Cranberries.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
I shrug. \u201cSounds familiar. I\u2019d have to hear something by
\nthem.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Paxton digs his phone out of his pocket. Tapping a few
\nbuttons, he places it on the table between us. Low piano notes fill the space;
\na sad beat following. Then, a gravely male voice spills out. You can feel the
\npower of the lyrics as he sings with passion and conviction.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t the Cranberries. It\u2019s Bad Wolves doing a cover
\nof \u201cZombie\u201d, one of their songs, but it\u2019s incredible,\u201d he says, tapping the
\nbeat onto his thigh. \u201cHe had asked for the lead singer to perform on the cover,
\nbut she died before that could happen.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
I frown. \u201cThat\u2019s so sad.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
He nods. \u201cIt is. But I can\u2019t think of a better compliment to
\ngive a band than performing one of their songs.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Make sense. Isn\u2019t the old saying \u201cimitation is the highest
\nform of flattery\u201d? Paxton even sings a few of the words; barely audible but
\nloud enough that I can hear his voice. And man, he can sing.<\/span><\/div>\n
As the song ends, and the words really sink in, I find
\nmyself in new territory. I\u2019ve always enjoyed music, but not like this. Paxton,
\non the other hand, has a real passion. It\u2019s obvious in his movements, the way
\nhe closes his eyes during the powerful parts of the song. I listen to fill the
\nvoid. He listens to fill his soul.<\/span><\/div>\n
Before I can dive into anything else, duty calls. The
\nannoying bell chimes, bringing me back to reality.<\/span><\/div>\n
I stand and flash Paxton a real smile. \u201cThanks for the talk.
\nIt was nice to formally meet you again.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cHey,\u201d he says, jumping to his feet. \u201cAny chance you don\u2019t
\nhave a rule about going out with customers?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Chewing on my bottom lip, I debate my answer. Technically, I
\ndon\u2019t have any rules about dating except one. I just\u2026don\u2019t.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cNot a good idea,\u201d I say.<\/span><\/div>\n
As I walk toward the counter, he calls out behind me, \u201cYou
\nknow I\u2019m persistent, right?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
With a laugh, I ignore him as best I can and help the
\ngentleman at the counter. Dressed in a business suit with perfectly coiffed
\nhair, I\u2019m guessing executive. A far cry from the man still staring at me
\nsurreptitiously over his book.<\/span><\/div>\n
And yet, the suit doesn\u2019t do anything for me. If anything,
\nit reminds me of Craig and his MBA friends. Perfectly polished and needing to
\nimpress everyone.<\/span><\/div>\n
Paxton\u2019s hazel eyes don\u2019t seem like such an issue now. It
\nwas stupid to begin with, considering he\u2019s the exact opposite of Craig.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWhat? I\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t catch that,\u201d I say, trying to
\nfocus on what I\u2019m supposed to be doing.<\/span><\/div>\n
Mr. Suit gives a cocky grin, as if I was already a sure
\nthing.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWell, I was hoping to get a caramel macchiato, but I guess
\nI could get your number instead.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Ugh. Creep. \u201cUnfortunately, my number isn\u2019t on the menu, but
\nI can grab the macchiato for you. Small, medium, or large?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
He straightens his tie and runs a hand down it, drawing
\nattention to his well-cut torso. \u201cAre you sure it\u2019s not on the menu?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cYep,\u201d I say, letting the irritation come through my voice.
\n\u201cPositive.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
I turn and make his drink without another word. He needs to
\ngo. I\u2019m so caught into my head that I don\u2019t notice the turned-up corner of the
\nmat. Time slows almost to a stop as I have an out-of-body experience. The cup
\ntumbles through the air. The light brown liquid streams out as the black lid
\nflies off. Then, in either a case of irony or karma, Mr. Suit gets covered in
\nthe sticky sweet liquid.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cGoddamn it!\u201d he yells, frantically swiping his hands
\nagainst his now soaked jacket. \u201cI have a business meeting in a half hour.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cI\u2019m so sorry,\u201d I say, desperate to hold back my laugh. I\u2019m
\nnot trying to be glib, but I have a horrible habit of laughing in uncomfortable
\nsituations. Funerals, when people fall or injure themselves\u2026all of it sends me
\ninto a fit of giggles. And I really do feel horrible about ruining this poor
\nman\u2019s suit, but after his actions, I can\u2019t say I\u2019m too sorry about it.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cJust forget it.\u201d He storms toward the door, whipping it
\nopen and practically slamming it behind him.<\/span><\/div>\n
One look from Paxton is all it takes to break the dam to
\nrelease the giggles.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cServed him right,\u201d he says with a nod.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cYeah, but I do feel bad about it.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
He shuts his book again. \u201cDon\u2019t. He was a douche canoe and
\ndidn\u2019t know how to take no for an answer.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
I quirk a brow. \u201cLike you?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cI\u2019m different.\u201d Without warning, he stands and closes the
\ndistance, leaving only the counter separating us. \u201cYou\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Paxton gives me a wink and leaves me in a stupor as he heads
\nout the door.<\/span><\/div>\n
Somehow I get the feeling this won\u2019t be the last time I see
\nhim. The thought thrills me more than it should.<\/span><\/div>\n
